Excursions to discover the hinterland
Many tourists know Rimini, but few of them have also seen the green hills of the hinterland and the many villages that dot the valleys of Valmarecchia and Valconca. A village known especially for its restaurants and good local cuisine is Santarcangelo: worth seeing is the Museum of the habits and customs of the people of Romagna, the "mysterious" tuff caves and the wrought iron craft shops and the typical rust print of canvases. Just 20 km from Rimini there is Verucchio, a small village from which you can enjoy a spectacular view that embraces the entire coast, from Cervia to Gabicce. Its Rocca del Sasso is one of the best preserved fortifications of the Signoria: the romantic story of "Paolo and Francesca", told by Dante in the Divine Comedy, took place right here.
San Leo, formerly known as Montefeltro, is located on an enormous rock mass and can be reached via a single road cut into the rock: time in this small village really seems to have stopped in the Middle Ages. On the highest point of the spur stands the impregnable Fort, where Count Cagliostro was imprisoned.
